Welding cost estimator
Choose the job and the metal, then set the hours the welder expects to spend. The job only sets a starting number of hours, so change it to match what you hear on the call.
| Welding time | Steel, full rate range | Steel, middle of the range | Aluminum or stainless |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 hours | $60 to $65 | $60 | $90 to $125 |
| 1 hour | $60 to $125 | $80 to $100 | $90 to $250 |
| 2 hours | $120 to $250 | $160 to $200 | $180 to $500 |
| 4 hours | $240 to $500 | $320 to $400 | $360 to $1,000 |
| 8 hours | $480 to $1,000 | $640 to $800 | $720 to $2,000 |
Rates used: $60 to $125 an hour nationally with $80 to $100 named most often, a minimum charge near $60, and aluminum or stainless at 1.5 to 2 times steel. Results are rounded to the nearest $5 and leave out travel and materials. These are national figures from the sources below, not quotes and not Houston prices.
How the estimate is built
Three published figures drive every number on this page. HomeGuide's welding cost guide, as search results show it, gives an hourly rate of about $60 to $125 for professional work, centered on $80 to $100. Thumbtack says some welders set a floor of roughly $60 per job, however short, and that aluminum and stainless often run 1.5 to 2 times the price of steel.
The estimator multiplies your hours by the hourly range, lifts the low end up to the minimum charge, and applies the metal multiplier. The full range runs from the lowest hourly rate to the highest. The middle range uses only the $80 to $100 band. Both are rounded to the nearest $5, so they read as a planning range and not as a quote.

National ranges, not Katy prices
Each figure behind the estimator is a national number. None describes pricing in Katy, Fulshear or Sealy, so a provider near you may charge more or less. That gap is why the result is a range, and why this page says so next to it.
The bar under the result compares your range with the typical national job. Thumbtack's welding cost page puts that at about $159 to $514, with a low end near $69 and a high end near $1,256, so a price outside the typical band is not automatically wrong. A short visit sits at the bottom and a long structural repair can sit well past the top.
Hours are the hard part
Hours move the result more than any other input, and they are the number nobody can know before the work is seen. The job types here only set a starting figure drawn from what the service pages say. A latch or hinge repair can be close to the minimum. A railing post or gate takes an hour or two. A cracked trailer frame needs cutting, plating and re-welding. A beam repair can take a full day or more.
Photos change the number. A provider who has seen the gate, the crack or the post can say how long the weld will take and what has to be ground off first. Put that figure into the hours box and the range tightens to something worth comparing with the quote you receive.
What the range leaves out
The estimator prices welding time and nothing else. Several other things reach the final invoice.
- Travel, which the provider sets. Brookshire is about 7 miles west of Katy, Fulshear is 33 miles from downtown Houston and Sealy is 49 miles west of it, so a call at the far end of the corridor can carry more of it.
- Materials. Plate, hinges, posts or a replacement hitch can be extra, and rod or wire often rides on the truck.
- Preparation. Grinding off rust, paint, grease and old cracked welds takes time before the first new weld goes in.
- Access and timing. Soft ground after rain, a locked gate, work at height and rush or after-hours calls can all raise a quote.
- How the clock runs. Some providers bill from the moment the truck leaves their yard and others from your gate.
Reading the result against a quote
Treat the middle range as a sanity check. A quote inside the full range is ordinary. A quote well above the top deserves a question about what it includes, who approves extra work found once the grinder comes out, and what happens if the repair needs a second visit.
The mobile welding cost guide shows where each national figure comes from and how a minimum charge shapes small jobs. Take the questions in what to ask a mobile welder to the call, and read trailer frame crack repair or replace if the job is a cracked frame.
Common questions
Is this estimate a quote?
No. It is a range built from national figures. The provider who calls you back sets the price, and that price depends on the job, the metal, the access and the distance.
Why does aluminum or stainless raise the range?
Those metals need different filler and technique than steel, and the national cost page lists steel as the cheapest metal to weld. The estimator applies the 1.5 to 2 times figure it reports.
Can this site tell me what a Katy welder charges?
No. No Katy price list was found, so every figure is national. This site is an independent referral service and passes your details to a local provider, who gives the actual price.
